Chapter Twenty-One

While holo-Kwin explained the situation to the Elders, Jaeger sent Elaphus back to the Osprey. The fleet-footed doctor returned in record time, hauling a pack full of the tools Occy had requested and a small inflatable raft.

“I wouldn’t recommend lingering any longer than necessary.” She consulted her medical scanner as Occy pulled the raft plug and watched it unfold.

“Kwin said the radiation levels weren’t dangerous to humans,” Jaeger said.

Elaphus peered down at Jaeger over the top of her computer. “Captain,” she said in her faintly patronizing voice. “For entirely unmodded humans, that’s probably true.

“However, none of us are what you might call natural. Gene modding is a relatively new art. We don’t have many longitudinal studies on the stability of the morphed or modded human genome. We don’t know what might trigger additional mutations.”

“Duly noted.” Jaeger sighed. “One more thing to worry about.”

Heeding holo-Kwin’s radiation warnings, most of the Locauri had cleared the area, although the Elders lingered in the distant trees, talking animatedly to the Overseer. Seeker had ordered most of the crew from the site as well and remained nearby, watching the goings-on from where he sat comfortably on Baby’s back.

Holo-Kwin vanished. The silvery droid sphere zipped to where Toner was trying to figure out how to get the raft into the water five meters below. The droid began to speak very rapidly.

“My captain has concluded his conversation with the cousins and is ready to begin the expedition into the shrine. While monitoring the situation through my sensors, he is also consulting with his crew and has asked me to act as mediator while he is otherwise preoccupied. Are we ready to go?”

“Yeah.” Occy set his tool kit in the raft. “I’ll meet you over there.” With no further ceremony, he turned and flung himself over the cliff.

Toner stared after him, then shrugged. “I guess that’s one way to do it. Tiny? You coming?”

“We’ll be back as soon as we can,” Jaeger told Seeker. “And Seeker. Have a team ready. Just in case we need to extract our little mutant.”

Seeker acknowledged the order with his customary grunt.

“Don’t call me Tiny,” Jaeger added, joining Toner and the raft by the cliffside. Toner shrugged and tipped the raft forward.

They plunged toward the river, with the silvery AI sphere zipping ahead of them.
